What We Believe Defines the Future of Rail

Across Europe, rail is once again at the centre of transport policy. Governments are investing heavily in railway infrastructure, expanding tram and light rail networks, and encouraging a gradual shift from road to rail (European Commission, 2020). The direction is clear. Rail has a vital role to play in building a more sustainable, resilient and efficient transport system for the future. But the next challenge is to ensure that we can maintain it safely, efficiently and sustainably for decades to come. 

For us, this is one of the most important conversations shaping the future of rail. While public discussion often focuses on new infrastructure and rolling stock, the long-term success of every railway also depends on the equipment, technology and investment decisions that keep the network operating every day of the year. 

Sustainability also means making smarter investments 

Across Europe, significant public funding is being directed towards railway infrastructure, urban rail and sustainable transport (European Commission / CINEA, 2026). These investments are essential, but budgets are finite. Infrastructure owners, cities and contractors must decide where investments create the greatest long-term value. 

Sustainability is therefore not only about building something new. Many railway maintenance vehicles were built to operate for decades, and lifecycle modernisation can extend their working life by focusing investment on the areas that create the greatest operational value. 

For us at Saalasti Rails, this is responsible lifecycle thinking: making the best use of existing assets while directing new investment where new technology delivers the greatest benefit.

Electrification is expanding the possibilities of rail operations 

Electrification is becoming increasingly important in the equipment supporting daily rail operations. In urban rail, electric maintenance vehicles offer clear benefits in terms of local emissions and noise. In ports and industrial rail yards, electric shunting winches have already provided an efficient alternative for moving rail vehicles for decades, and electrification is now opening new possibilities for shunting locomotives and other rail equipment. 

For us at Saalasti Rails, this is one of the main directions of product development. The question is not whether everything should become electric, but where electrification creates the greatest value for our customers. The answer will vary by application. The future of rail will not be defined by electrification alone, but by applying the right technology where it creates the greatest long-term value. 

Why this conversation matters 

At Saalasti Rails, we have chosen Shift to Rail as more than a slogan because it reflects how we see the future of transport. Moving more passengers and freight onto rail is one of Europe’s greatest opportunities to build a lower-emission and more resilient transport system (European Environment Agency, 2026). But achieving that ambition requires more than new infrastructure and new rolling stock. It also requires a long-term commitment to maintaining railways safely, efficiently and responsibly throughout their lifecycle. 

This is the conversation we want to contribute to. In the near futur we will share our perspectives on lifecycle modernization, electrification, urban rail maintenance, shunting technologies and the engineering decisions shaping the next generation of railway maintenance across Europe.
